Foods to Help Manage Asthma

Asthma is a very common illness with over 25 million Americans suffering from the affliction. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 1 in 13 people in the U.S. have asthma, this comes to 7.7% of adults and 8.4% of children. It is currently the leading chronic disease in children leading to many days out sick from school. Parents need to be aware of triggers so they can help their young ones to reduce the risks. With so many people suffering from this ailment, is there anything that can be done to alleviate it or at least help with the symptoms and effects. 

Studies show that there is an asthma diet, which can help those suffering alleviate some of the symptoms:

1. Seeds

Sunflower seeds are full of potassium, vitamin E, magnesium and other nutrients that can relieve the symptoms of asthma when eaten on a regular basis.

2. Avocados

Avocados protect the cells from pollutants and harmful substances. They are high in L-glutathione, which reduces inflammation.

3. Kale and spinach

These greens are both rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene; they protect free radicals and act as antioxidants to reduce symptoms and attacks.

4. Bananas

Bananas have high levels of fiber and can reduce wheezing. Many that believe in holistic diets believe that those with asthma should eat at least one banana a day.

5. Ginger

Ginger Root has been used for years as a healthy herb with anti-inflammatory benefits that many feel it is more effective antihistamine than Benadryl. Because ginger has no negative effect on the body, it can be added to the diet every day.

6. Onions

Onions have long been considered to be associated with good health. Onions contain flavonoids which protect the lungs and bronchial tubes as well as reduce inflammation in capillary walls.

7. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are rich in lycopene and when cooked are easily absorbed into the body providing anti-inflammatory agents.

8. Non food asthma triggers

There are many different things that can trigger an asthma attack. Those suffering from asthma often breathe in allergy-causing substances and allergens that cause an attack, these things include dust mites, dog and cat dander, pollens and molds. Items such as cold air, stress, smoke from cigars and cigarettes and even air pollutants cause asthma symptoms to be triggered. Those with asthma need to be aware of exercise-induced asthma, which can cause wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath. It is careful to be aware of these symptoms when exercising.
